Abstract

DOWN SYNDROME (DS), ALSO KNOWN AS CHROMOSOME 21 TRISOMY, IS A GENETIC ABNORMALITY. FIRST PERFORMED IN 1866 BY THE ENGLISH PHYSICIAN JONH LANGDON DOWN, IN A PUBLISHED WORK, WHICH EXPOSES SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF DOWN SYNDROME CARRIERS9.PEOPLE WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME MAY BE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE ORAL PROBLEMS. AS THE DELAY IN THE BIRTH OF TEETH, DENTAL STAINS AND HALITOSIS ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON DISEASES OF THESE PEOPLE. PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE ORAL PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF THEIR ADDICTION AND VULNERABILITY. PEOPLE WITH THIS SYNDROME ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ORAL DISEASES DUE TO POOR ORAL HYGIENE, CAUSING A HIGH INCIDENCE OF GINGIVITIS AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE.SYNDROMIC PATIENTS IN MANY OF THE INTERNAL CASES WITH THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS OF MOUTH BREATHING, OPEN MOUTH, OCCLUSAL AND DENTAL CHANGES, ALONG WITH NEUROLOGICAL AND MOTOR DISABILITIES. THIS WILL HINDER THE CORRECT ORAL HYGIENE, CAUSING DISORDERS AND FAVORING THE DEVELOPMENT OF ORAL DISEASES.
