WITH THE AIM OF DISCUSSING THE IMPORTANCE OF LINKING MENTAL DISORDERS WITH ORAL HEALTH, SCHIZOPHRENIA IS DEFINED AS A CHRONIC IDIOPATHIC PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER OF MULTIFACTORIAL ORIGIN, CHARACTERIZED BY A SERIES OF SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT AFFECT 1% OF THE WORLD POPULATION. IT IS EVIDENT THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH THIS PSYCHOSIS PRESENT OBSTACLES TO THE REALIZATION OF THEIR SELF-CARE, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN THEIR GENERAL AND ORAL HEALTH. THE NEUROLEPTIC DRUGS USED TO TREAT SCHIZOPHRENIA AND SCHIZOPHRENIC DISORDERS HAVE DOPAMINERGIC ANTAGONIST PROPERTIES THAT CAUSE ADVERSE EFFECTS THAT INTERACT DIRECTLY WITH ORAL HEALTH. THIS DISCUSSION AIMS TO IMPROVE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA AND ITS PREDISPOSITION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASES OF THE ORAL CAVITY.
