Abstract
AS PERIODONTITES APICAIS SÃO RECONHECIDAMENTE O RESULTADO DA INTERA��O ENTRE A RESPOSTA IMUNOLÓGICA DO INDIV�DUO E MICRORGANISMOS PATOG�NICOS ORIUNDOS DO SISTEMA DE CANAIS RADICULARES. OS CANAIS RADICULARES INFECTADOS SÃO FONTES DESSES MICRORGANISMOS PATOG�NICOS E MEDIADORES INFLAMATÓRIOS QUE, AO EXTRAVASAREM PARA O TECIDO PERIAPICAL, CRIAM E SUSTENTAM UMA RESPOSTA INFLAMATÓRIA, PODENDO RESULTAR EM UMA DESTRUI��O DO OSSO PERIAPICAL, E O DESENVOLVIMENTO DE GRANULOMAS, CISTOS E OUTRAS LES�ES PERIAPIAIS (LIAPATAS; NAKOU; RONTOGIANNI, 2003).
UMA DAS TEORIAS PARA A FORMA��O DOS CISTOS PERIAPICAIS � BASEADA NA AGUDIZA��O DE LES�ES PERIAPICAIS DE CAR�TER CR�NICO, COM CONSEQUENTE PROLIFERA��O DE REMANESCENTES EPITELIAIS EM TORNO DE UM FOCO INFLAMATÓRIO AGUDO (ABSCESSO), OU EM TORNO DE UMA �REA NECRÓTICA FOCAL RESULTANTE DO INSULTO TECIDUAL CAUSADO PELO ABSCESSO (VALDERHAUG, 1974).
