Introduction: Restorative dentistry has been developing with the aim of offering practical and aesthetically acceptable options for oral rehabilitation. Among these innovations, the use of monochromatic composite resin stands out, an approach that suggests the restoration of the dental structure using a single shade, to achieve the natural shade of the tooth. This method has become popular due to its practical execution, pleasant results and longevity, and is particularly indicated for anterior teeth, where the aesthetic demands are greater, although it is also indicated for posterior teeth, according to professional indication. Objective: The purpose of this study is to raise a theoretical basis to assist professionals in choosing the restorative procedure, highlighting the main characteristics of monochromatic composite resin, both in aesthetics and functionality. Methods: A literature review was carried out with articles published in scientific databases, such as SciELO, PubMed and Lilacs. Articles published between 2016 and 2024 were selected, addressing the characteristics, indications and challenges faced in clinical applicability. Results and Discussion: The monochromatic technique has proven to be an effective alternative due to its practicality, cost-effectiveness and good aesthetic results. It also stands out for its biocompatibility, offering safety in different clinical situations. The so-called “chameleon effect” helps the resin visually integrate with the tooth structure, facilitating clinical work. It is highly recommended for simple restorations, such as small fractures or enamel defects. However, in cases that require greater aesthetic complexity or involve significant loss of tooth structure, it may not be the best choice, with the use of layered techniques being preferable. Conclusion: The use of monochromatic resin has proven to be a quick and effective solution in restorative dentistry; however, its choice must be judicious, accurately assessing the needs of each case. In procedures where aesthetics and durability are highly demanded, other techniques can be considered the gold standard.Published
