Abstract

Introduction: The electronic cigarette, also known as an electronic smoking device (ESD), is a technological alternative to the traditional cigarette that delivers nicotine through an aerosol. Although it was created with the intention of reducing the harm caused by tobacco, its use has rapidly expanded, especially among adolescents. Its modern appearance, variety of flavors, and false sense of safety are factors that contribute to the product’s growing popularity. Many young people do not identify as smokers, using the term “vaper” to describe the habit, which masks the real health risks. Regarding oral health, the electronic cigarette can cause effects such as xerostomia, nicotine stomatitis, hairy tongue, angular cheilitis, an increase in the incidence of cavities and periodontal diseases, in addition to possible cellular changes with carcinogenic potential. Objective: This study aims to assess the level of knowledge among young people regarding the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes. Methodology: This is a quantitative survey-type study developed in two stages. The first stage will consist of educational lectures and the application of a structured questionnaire to approximately 200 high school students from public and private schools in Goianésia-GO. The data obtained will be statistically analyzed using SPSS software. The second stage will involve screening, diagnosis, and dental treatment for students identified as electronic cigarette users. Results: We expect that the activities carried out in this project will result in a significant improvement in the oral health of the participating students; we aim to increase awareness about the risks of electronic cigarette use on oral health. Conclusion: The electronic cigarette poses significant risks to oral health, especially among adolescents. The purpose of this project is essential to expand young people’s knowledge, prevent health damage, and promote behavioral change through education and clinical intervention. By combining information, awareness, and free dental care, the project presents itself as an effective tool to reduce the use of these devices and improve the quality of life of the students involved.
